So what? Result clauses straddle these distinctions. A result clause can be seen as a kind of causal clause viewed from the opposite side of the problem. In its purest form, it simply expresses the consequence of some action, whether it expressed any intention or not: The tree fell over so that the house was crushed. The giant stomped heavily so that the house was crushed. The bulldozer operator rammed the tree so that it fell over. None of these examples expresses the intention of the tree (normally thought to be incapable of intention), the giant (who might be causing this mayhem either intentionally or inadvertently), or the bulldozer operator (probably intentionally).

One can see that the general temporal construction is a bit more like a condition: “ . . if and when she came, we had. . ” English is not very good at distinguishing these two kinds of temporal clause in their internal makeup, though arguably there’s no particular reason they need to be distinguished: context almost invariably steers us to the correct meaning. Greek, on the other hand, uses its elegant generalizing particle ἄν (for which there is really no literal translation at all) to flag the general temporal clause (and the corresponding condition—about which more shortly).

They can operate as adverbs, adjectives, or nouns. By far the most common are the adverbial clauses, which is what we’ll be talking about in this chapter. There are a few kinds of noun clauses, and really only one main kind of adjectival clause. By contrast, there seem to be a plethora of adverbial clauses. In fact there are not that many. Nine categories will encompass most if not all of them, and they can be further clustered into a few more basic groups. There are simple adverbial clauses that describe attendant circumstances, such as where something happens, or how it happens.
