Wood, in chapter 10, explores the tensions between an Atlantic and a multicultural view of the North American past. Advocating a continental approach to the history of the Americas, he emphasizes the importance of a perspective deriving out of developments in the middle and western portions of the North American continent, most of which, by the close of the early modern period, still remained under indigenous control. In chapter 11, Jack P. Greene proposes an American hemispheric approach as the most promising avenue toward constructing an understanding of developments within the New Worlds of the Americas and as a device for promoting both an appreciation of the variations among and within those worlds and the comparative history of them.

9 If Columbus threw a line across the Atlantic, thousands of his successors knit a web of permanent ties over and around the ocean and, in the process, made significant discoveries about the physical nature of the Earth and its seas. Those tasks mobilized people from every part of the Atlantic and at every social or political level. Eventually, Native Americans, ordinary sailors, fellows of Europe’s learned societies, as well as political or military leaders, would all make contributions. If crossing the Atlantic had been an overwhelmingly European or even imperial story, conceiving of that ocean as a network of places and natural forces involved a far wider range of actors.

1 The history of the Atlantic’s contemporary meanings occurred in three stages. In the first, Europeans thought of the Atlantic as a geographic space to get across, a rather belated idea that contradicted an ancient suspicion that the ocean was not a real space at all. In the second stage, the peoples in the post-Columbian countries that faced the Atlantic thought of that ocean as a space in which to make or imagine physical connections, both among different places and among different natural forces.
