Digital Data Filtering One of the simplest noise filtering techniques is signal averaging. By repeating the experiment several times and averaging the results, the noise will tend to cancel itself out while the signal should remain constant. If the Copyright © 2005 by Marcel Dekker noise is truly random, the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal increases by the square root of the number of times successive signals are averaged. Experiments need not necessarily be repeated many times in order to achieve better signal-to-noise as a result of signal averaging.

That means one needs to decide the last factor (principle component) that has useful information and discard all factors after that one. A common mistake in multivariate calibration is to use too many factors to over fit the data. The extra factors can make a calibration curve look unrealistically good (noise also gets fitted) but unstable and inaccurate when used in prediction. A rigorous validation step is necessary to avoid these kinds of mistakes. When the calibration sample set is sufficiently large, the validation samples can be randomly selected from the sample pool.

Many commercial interfaces allow the user to adjust the range of the ADC for this reason. 1. Sampling Interval (Rise-Time) The sampling interval is a second important consideration. If the sampling rate is too low, important “fine features” may be lost while using excessively high sampling rates wastes both computing time and disk space. Figure 2 shows the effect of sampling rate on the depiction of a modeled chromatographic peak with a partially coeluting smaller peak with narrower peak width.
