At first it seemed to Johnny as if the world had come to an end. Then, as the shock and grief wore off, he began to think that he was getting used to the idea of living alone with his dad. But the Korean War changed things. Johnny's father had been a bomber pilot during World War II. So the Air Force asked Mr. Dixon to come back and serve again, this time as a jet pilot. Mr. Dixon could have refused. He was the sole surviving parent of a child under the age of eighteen. But Mr. Dixon was itching to get into the cockpit of a fighter plane.

He smiled kindly at Johnny. "Now, then, what can I do for you? " Johnny was so flabbergasted by the tale of the fuss closet that it took some effort to drag his mind back to what he wanted to talk about. "I... I found something, Professor," he began slowly. "I was... kind of pokin' around in the basement of the church, and I think I found the... " Now it was the professor's turn to be amazed. " he exclaimed. "Are you serious? " Johnny nodded emphatically. "Uh-huh. It was all inside of a fake book.
