Salt Lake City, its coffers thus legally enriched, spent $1,400 to purchase a library from the Grand Masonic Lodge of Utah, a library estimated to be worth $24,000 by the knowledgeable scholars of that period. Having no library building, those books were housed in the big new City and County Building in Washington Square park. The Ladies Literary Club was then credited with "persuading an eccentric mining millionaire" named John Q. Packard into donating both the site and construction funds for the 1905 building on State Street.

And yet, to traditionalist minds, the Hotel Utah has lasted well, inside and out. Inside, of course, the thirty-foot-high lobby, with its twelve rotund pillars and gleaming Czechoslovakian-crystal chandelier, plus its Empire Room, bespeak the era when stage stars who had crossed in such ocean liners as the Mauretania arrived in our city aboard comfortable, heavyweight, nonstreamlined Pullman cars, entering the lobby accompanied by fitted steamer trunks and gleaming cowhide suitcases. After all, William Howard Taft slept here, a president rotund enough to require a special bed.

In part this was because leaders of Utah's Mormon Church were in considerable disfavor or even in prison in the wake of the Edmunds-Tucker Act prohibiting the practice of polygamy. High above several balconies, gargoyle-like monsters and fanciful creatures reminded those who glimpsed them of stonework on medieval cathedrals. Unfortunately, many exterior carvings weathered so poorly they were removed, and replacement is only partial.
