Demand system-wide solutions” to complement strategies for addressing problems experienced by girls (O’Doherty, 1994: 1). 4 This was indeed the picture of deficit and failure made familiar at professional development conferences, in the popular press and to some extent among teachers at Hillside High School, but whereas the tendency at these sites was to offer explanations in terms of biology and psychology, O’Doherty, like participants in the 1995 Gender Equity Taskforce initiative referred to earlier, framed his report’s understanding of gender in social constructionist terms.

For Victor Turner, the notion of experience was of something “lived through” (ibid. 3); a sense of being-in-the-world entailing consciousness of experience understood not only as sense data or cognition, but also as feelings and expectations. In Edward Bruner’s words, “Lived experience . . as thought and desire, as word and image, is the primary reality” (ibid. 5). Put this way, as I have indicated, experience is conceived of as prediscursive. Gaining access to that experience, as I have said, is at the core of the project of ethnography as traditionally conceived in terms of participant observation, just as in this study it is my aim to gain access to experience constituted discursively prior to my intervention.
