Imagine spending a few years where all that’s expected of you is to learn? Sounds like a fine deal to me. Eric Shapiro: Learning in the field is probably better. I started off at Emerson College as a film major, but hated it and switched to writing, literature, and publishing. The technology made me crazy; I realized I was far more interested in the script and performances (which is still true), and had no patience to learn about loading film into a camera. So, for me, there was a disconnect at school between what they were teaching and what excited me about the medium.
There are cops who truly care about helping people and doing the right thing. Then, there are the corrupt sons of bitches and the bullies: people who are jaded about life and are on a constant power trip. Some of my professors fell into that category. There was a lot of bitterness going around that school. I don’t believe there’s any excuse for this. I’ve had plenty of things not go my way and I don’t take it out on other people. They were supposed to be there to inspire us but spent most of their time telling us we were going to fail.
They should have been happy to help the students make the kind of movies they wanted to make. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that way at all. Also, there was no effort to teach us anything about the business side of things, even making budgets. When we graduated they provided zero help in finding us jobs. I’m still struggling to make even the simplest ends meet. I remember I went back to visit one teacher Film School I interned for who was a complete ass when I walked into his office. I told him I was making movies and all he did was tell me how the students who graduate never give enough money to the alumni department.
