Example text

In the Timaeus the entire Socratic discourse on the city is a remembrance, and not only in the sense that it recalls what was said yesterday. To remember is to bring back before one’s vision something that, as past, is—and remains—absent. In a more radical sense, to remember is to bring and hold before one’s vision things that in and of themselves pass away, things that are always already past as soon as they come to presence, things that are not just singularly past but rather are determined as such by their becoming-past, things that even before becoming singularly past are already stamped by passingness.

The city remembered in the Socratic discourse would be “a paradigm laid up in heaven,” one that is “nowhere on earth” (Rep. 592b). And yet, the Socratic remembrance does not merely attend to the vision of this paradigm. It also recoils from it, back toward another kind of city, one made in its image and yet capable of being established on earth, a city exposed to the forces of ÅrwV and lineage, of exteriority and alterity, of materiality and scarcity. It is this movement of recoil from the e†doV that generates the comedy in which the limits of the paradigmatic city come to be exposed; indeed one could say that the comedy is the recoil enacted.

Thus it is that, as Socrates calls for setting the city in motion, his very discourse becomes erotic and affective; it becomes a discourse of desire, mirroring precisely that for which it calls. Yet, when the city comes alive, when those unnecessary desires spoken of in the Republic are released, it will become necessary to cut off a piece of another city’s land in order for the means of satisfying these desires to be made available. As a consequence the city, thus brought to life, will have to go to war.
