If one of us had challenged him, he might have tried to listen but he wouldn’t have understood. And the chances are that he’d simply have quashed the rebellion. In the same way, the people who have always been at the top of the workplace don’t really get it. The prejudices are so deeply ingrained that it takes an unusually insightful top person (and usually the top people are middle-class, able-bodied white males) to appreciate how unjust it is. It’s obvious to the women reading this book (unless you’re young and still assume the career/motherhood combination will be plain sailing).

We might train in one type of work but later decide we don’t like it, or jobs might dry up, so we retrain into something else. These days, we build up a group of abilities, or transferable skills, to take with us from one job or one career to the next. Some base-level jobs require only these transferable skills, which might include being good with people or numbers. Employers will now often accept that new workers don’t need specific experience if they can show a good range of skills, can be trained and are keen.

That’s part of it. But another part is what it’s actually like once we’re there: apparently, the term ‘melons’ is an all too familiar cry of male MPs in the UK parliament at Westminster. What self-respecting woman would want to be there to listen to it? 12 And here’s why: 40 per cent of MPs, for instance, are lawyers. Lawyers, particularly those old enough to be senior MPs, generally emerged through the public school system (the British private schooling of the upper middle classes) largely in single-sex environments.
